هُوَ الحُبُّ من يُطفِه أَلهَبَه
Whoever rebukes the lovelorn assails him.
I defend the lovesick one against those who rebuke him; for this is love: whoever tries to quench it only makes it burn.
Such is love: whoever quenches it sets it ablaze.
My heart has drifted far from me while my longing remains; by God, how wondrously strange is my affair!

My heart has gone far from me, yet my longing is with me.
My inmost heart pines for my slayer; such is the way of passion for those who have experienced it.
By God, how strange my plight!
The character of one who tastes it softens, and the nature of one refined by it becomes gentle.

My heart yearns for my slayer.
He generously offers good will to the one who angers him, and seeks the comfort of the one who exhausted him.
Such is love for whoever has experienced it.
When the infatuation of love consumes my heart, it prays for bliss for the very one who tormented it.
