Whoever among those you see meets him,

meets him with reverence and deference to his authority.

And we hold a rank above them: we are his

two brothers, apart from all the company.

Our meeting him in his enemy's presence

    or otherwise—the two are alike.

    Affection is not truly affection

    until its foundations are impregnable,

until, when you do wrong, it is as though

you had kept doing good in your brother's eyes,

out of trust and familiar ease; indeed, his conscience

stands in your defense with excuses and proof.

So remain safe, as one over whom bends from above

    the All-Merciful's protection, enfolding him.

Sword of the caliphate, set foremost in his defense,

and his sincere counselor, in secret and in public.

And praise be to God, who has drawn us together,

a favor from the Gracious, the Bestower of blessings.

He united hearts in contentment, so they helped one another

with sincere counsel, and were united in faith.

A sword that is brandished, and a judge through whom were upheld

    the ordinances of the Book and the proof of the Criterion;

and a faithful brother who, when he sets out in the morning, strains

under the burden between my hand and my tongue.
