    مُعتَدٍ لا عَدِمتُه

    Unjust, as I have known him;

    a transgressor—may I never lose him!

    Indifferent if I draw close to him,

    heedless if I sever ties with him.

    Ready with broken promises and withholding,

    wherever I sought him.

    He blamed me when I blamed him,

    thinking I had wronged him.

    I said: 'May I never return! Here—

    this—a mouth I have sealed.'

    How often, how often, I folded away what

    was within me, and how often I concealed it!

    كُلُّ ذا قَد فَهِمتُه

    He said what he wished—let him speak;

    all this I have understood.

    Even if he wept his whole life from longing,

    I would never pity him.

    I said: 'Something I was denied—

    what I was denied is not mine.'

    كَ وَغَيظٍ كَظَمتُه

    How many a grief I folded away concerning

    you, and how much anger I swallowed;

    ءِ طَويلٍ جَشَمتُه

    and hardship among hardships,

    long-lasting, which I bore;

    ها وَضَيم رَمَمتُه

    and matters in which I bowed,

    and injustice I patched over;

    and a stay amid humiliation,

    a long one I endured.

    وَالهَوى ما سَئِمتُه

    And my life—I have grown weary of it;

    yet love—I have not grown weary of it.
