أَباحَdivulged الدَّمعthe tears سِرّاًa secret لَمnot أَبُحهُI divulged it
فَدَمعيso my tears آفَتيmy bane لاdo not تَظلِمينيwrong me
Tears divulged a secret I had not divulged.
My tears have revealed a secret I never confessed,
So my tears are my bane—do not wrong me.
So do not blame me for my tears, my affliction.
فَماso what ذَنبيmy fault إِذاif كانَتwere دُموعيmy tears
تُعينُaid عَلَيَّagainst me أَسبابَthe means المنونِdeath
What fault is mine, then, if my tears
Why should I be blamed if my tears
Aid the instruments of death against me?
Help the causes of death assail me?
إِذاif ظَنَّsuspects الجَليسُthe companion بِبَعضِsome of ماwhat بيis within me
نَصَبنَthey set up لِعَينِهِbefore his eye وَجهَthe face اليَقينِcertainty
If a companion suspects some of what ails me,
When my companion suspects some of what is in me
They set the face of certainty before his eyes.
He sets before his eyes the face of certainty.
وَنُرمىand we are pelted بِالظُّنونِwith suspicions إِذاwhen اِلتَقَيناwe meet
فَتَكشِفُso it dispels لمحَتيmy glance لُبسَthe uncertainty الظُّنونِthe suspicions
And we are pelted with suspicions when we meet,
And we are accused by suspicions when we meet,
So my glance dispels the uncertainty of those suspicions.
So my glance uncovers the garb of suspicions.
