Sleep, for you have set sleeplessness to watch over me,

Carefree—away with whoever has fallen in love!

You have left of my body only

A specter unlike the one that was created,

And a youth who called to you in distress

That set his entrails ablaze with burning pangs.

    His eye drowned in tears,

So he called its pupil 'the drowned one.'

It is not for one whose charms are perfect

To return the gaze of one who has fallen in love.

Yours is to show us beauty,

And ours is to put our eyes to work.
