Peace upon the house I do not visit,

even though someone dear to me dwells there,

and even though its curtains hide from my eyes

a beloved through whom the world grows beautiful and sweet.

A beloved in whose presence pleasures grow lovelier,

and mirth's eye burns with tears when he is absent.

His flanks bend until he seems,

when swaying beneath his clothes, a slender branch.

I am content with fancy passing between me and her,

though the eye has no share in it,

for fear that the tongues of enemies be stirred against us,

and a faultfinder seek his chance against us and find fault.

As if the sweep of every onlooker's gaze

were a sentinel over the lovers' movements.
