May rain bless our gathering, where were brought together
A drink to our gathering in which
Gems of conversation and the companions' obedience.
Were brought together witticism and obedience in sitting
ظَلناwe spent the day وَيَحيىand Yahya كَالمُؤَمَّرِlike an appointed commander بَينَناamong us

We spent the day, with Yahya like an appointed commander among us,
Me and Yahya like leaders among us
Being served drink and drinking now and then from the cup.
We were given drink and drank at times from the cup

Divided into two groups: some of us drank wine,
In halves we drank, some of us from coffee
Pure, shining like the gauge's flame.
Pure which lights up like the flame of a lamp
وَالآخَرونَand the others عَلىupon النَّبيذِthe nabidh (fruit brew) عُكوفُهُمtheir devotion
شَتّانَhow different! إِنif قِسناهُماwe compare them both بِقِياسِby a measure
And the others were devoted to nabidh;
And the others leaning towards the wine
How different the two, if we judge them by one measure!
Far apart if we compared them by measure

Two, and between them she whom I likened
Two between them which I likened
To a myrtle stem between two myrtle boughs.
To a rod of myrtle between two myrtle boughs

ياO اِبنson of الذُّؤابَةِthe noblest lineage مِنamong بَنيthe descendants of العَبَّاسِal-Abbas
There was no flaw except that you were not there,
No fault except that you were not
O scion of the noblest among al-Abbas's descendants.
O son of Thu'ba of the Abbasids

And when I remember you or Ali, I remain
And if I mentioned you or Ali I did not cease to be
Sorrowful with pent-up grief and anxious thoughts.
Sorrowful from anxiety and from morbid thoughts
