فَدَيتُكِmay I be your ransom قَدalready كَفَفتُI ceased عَنِfrom العِتابِreproach
لماbecause حاذَرتُI feared مِنof سوءِharshness الجَوابِthe reply
May I be your ransom! I have ceased my reproaches,
I ransom you, I have refrained from reproach
Because I feared a harsh reply.
When I was wary of an evil response
وَلَمand did not أَرَI see حيلَةًa means تُجديavails لِنَفعٍfor benefit
لَدَيكُمwith you غَيرَexcept صَبريmy patience وَاِحتِسابيand my hope of reward
And I saw no means that would bring benefit
And I saw no stratagem that could benefit
With you, save my patience and hope of reward.
With you except my patience and reckoning
وَأَعمَلتُand I put to work الأَمانيwishes فيكِconcerning you حَتَّىuntil
كَأَنِّيas though I قَدalready مَلَكتُكِI possessed you فيin الحِسابِreckoning
And I indulged my wishes for you, until
And I made wishes regarding you until
It seemed I had already possessed you, in my reckoning.
It was as if I possessed you in my thoughts
أُعاتَبُI am reproached فيfor الهَوىlove وَأَقَلُّyet the least وَجديof my longing
بِمَنfor the one whom أَهوىI love يَجلis too great عَنِfor العِتابِreproach
I am reproached for love, yet even the least of my longing
I chide in passion and lessen my torment
For the one I love is too great for reproach.
For one I love too noble for reproach
