أَماIs there not مِنany حَكَمٍjudge يعديgrants redress
عَلىagainst مَنthe one who سامَنيhas taxed me جَهديmy limit of endurance
Is there no judge to grant redress
Is there no judge to pass
against the one who has taxed me to my limit?
Judgment on those who thwarted me with their toil?
أَماIs there not مِنany حَكَمٍjudge يَقضيrules
عَلىagainst المَولاةِthe mistress لِلعَبدِin favor of the slave
Is there no judge to rule
Is there no judge to decide
against the mistress in favor of the slave?
On the devotion of a slave?
فَقَدfor indeed حالَتshe has turned away عَنِfrom العَهدِthe pledge
وَماand not حُلتُI have turned away عَنِfrom العَهدِthe pledge
For she has turned away from the pledge,
For she has turned from her pledge
and I have not turned away from the pledge.
While I have not turned from mine.
عَصيتُI defied النَّاسَthe people فيin حُبِّيmy love
كَأَنِّيas though I were أُمَّةٌa nation وَحديby myself
I defied the people in my love,
I disobeyed people in my love
as though I were a nation by myself.
As if I were a nation on my own.
