إِنَّindeed فيin الصَّبرِpatience لَخَيراًsurely good فَاِصطَبِرso persevere
وَاِستَعِذand seek refuge بِاللَّهِin God مِنfrom سوءِthe evil القَدَرof fate
In patience there is surely good, so persevere.
Patience is good, so be patient
And seek refuge in God from the evil of fate.
And seek refuge in Allah from misfortune
إِجعَلِmake الصَّبرَpatience لِماagainst what تحذرُهُyou fear it
جُنَّةًa shield فَالصَّبرُfor patience مِفتاحُthe key الظَفَرvictory
Make patience, against what you fear,
Make patience as your armor
a shield, for patience is the key to victory.
For patience is the key to triumph
كُلُّevery مَنone who حُدِّثتyou were told عَنهُabout him إِنَّهُthat he
نالَgained خَيراًgood فَاِعلَمَنthen know for certain أَنthat قَدindeed صَبَرhe persevered
Everyone of whom you have been told that he
All who I have heard of
gained good—know for certain that he persevered.
Attained good through patience, know this
إِنَّindeed فيin الصَّبرِpatience مُجيراًa protector لَكَfor you مِنfrom
صَولَةِthe assault الهَمِّof sorrow إِذاwhen الهَمُّsorrow حَضَرcomes
Indeed, in patience is a protector for you against
In patience there is protection for you
the assault of sorrow when sorrow comes.
From the onslaught of worries when they attack
عادَreturned بِالسّوءِwith harm عَلَيَّupon me حَذَريmy caution
My caution brought me harm in return;
Misfortune may return to me despite my caution
sometimes caution leads to harm.
Perhaps caution itself leads to misfortune
قَدَّرَdecreed اللَّهُGod عَلَيَّupon me أَنَّنيthat I
لاnot أَرىI see يَومَa day سُرورٍof joy فَأسَرand so I rejoice
God has decreed for me that I
Allah has ordained for me
shall see no day of joy in which to rejoice.
That I do not see a day of joy to delight in
أَتجافىI disregard عَنfrom هَناتِtroubles لَوif بِهاwith them
مُنيwere afflicted الخلقhumankind جَميعاًall لَاِنتَحَرwould kill itself
I disregard troubles that, were they to afflict
I shun the world's pleasures
all humankind, would drive it to kill itself.
If possessing them would make people worship me
إِنَّindeed فيin قَلبيmy heart وَلاand no ذَنبَblame لَكُمis yours
حُرقَةًa burning ache أثبتهاlodged it فيهِin it النَّظَرthe gaze
Indeed, in my heart—and you bear no blame—
In my heart, though you've done no wrong
is a burning ache that gazing has lodged there.
Is a burning ignited by sight
بَصَريmy sight جَرَّbrought عَلىupon قَلبيmy heart الشَّقاmisery
فَأَراحَso may He relieve اللَّهُGod قَلبيmy heart مِنfrom بَصَرsight
My sight brought misery upon my heart,
My eyes dragged grief to my heart
so may God relieve my heart of sight.
So may Allah give my heart relief from sight
زادَنيheightened in me شَوقاًlonging إِلَيكُمfor you هَجرُكُمyour abandonment
رُبَّماsometimes يَزدادُincreases شَوقاًlonging مَنone who هَجَرforsakes
Your abandonment increased my longing for you;
Being estranged from you increased my longing
sometimes one who forsakes feels greater longing.
Perhaps longing grows for one estranged
وَعَجيبٌand it is strange أَنَّthat حُبّيmy love لَكُمُfor you
صارَbecame ذَنباa sin عِندكُمin your eyes لاnot يُغتَفَرis forgiven
And it is strange that my love for you
Wondrous that my love for you
has become, in your eyes, an unforgivable sin.
Became, for you, a sin beyond forgiveness
لاlet not يضقbe narrow عَفوكyour pardon ماnot بيin me جَلَدendurance
وَاِغفِريand forgive ذَنبيmy sin وَإِنand even if كانَit had كبَرgrown great
Let your pardon not be narrow; I have no endurance.
Your forgiveness is boundless despite my hide
And forgive my sin, even if it has grown great.
So forgive my sin though it be grave
إِنَّindeed لِلمَوتِfor death إِلَيَّto me سُبُلاًpaths
غَيرَexcept أَنَّthat المَوتَdeath يَأتيcomes بِقَدَرby decree
Indeed, death has paths to me,
Death surely has ways to me
but death comes by decree.
Except death only comes by divine decree
لامَنيblamed me النَّاسُpeople عَلىfor حُبِّكُمlove for you
خابَfailed مَنwhoever عَنَّفَrebuked فيكُمconcerning you وَخَسَرand lost
People blamed me for loving you;
People blamed me for loving you
whoever rebuked me over you has failed and lost.
Lost is he who scolded you and failed
وَلَكُمْand you have نَبلٌarrows حِدادٌsharp صُيُبٌunerring
نَبلُarrows حُبٍّof love لَمnot تُفَوَّقwere nocked بِوَتَرon a bowstring
And yours are sharp arrows that strike true,
You have a nobility, a perfection, a grace
arrows of love, never nocked on a bowstring.
The nobility of peerless love
فَإِذاso when ماever (emphatic) شِئتِyou wish أَنto تَستَعبِديyou enslave
أَحَداًanyone أَرسَلتِyou sent سَهماًan arrow فَعَقَرso it struck down
So whenever you wish to enslave
When you desire to enslave someone
anyone, you send an arrow, and it strikes him down.
You unleash an arrow to wound
فَهوَso he عَبدٌa slave لَيسَdoes not يَعدوoverstep كُلَّماall that
أَوجَبَimposed المَولىthe master عَلَيهِupon him وَأَمَرand commanded
Then he is a slave, never straying beyond whatever
He becomes a slave, moving only
the master has imposed upon him and commanded.
As his Master obliges and commands
إِنَّنيindeed I أَصبَحتُI have become فيin حُبِّكُمُlove for you
بَينَbetween حالَينِtwo states كِلاboth الحالَينِthe two states شَرevil
Indeed, in my love for you I have come to be
I have become, in loving you
between two states, both of them wretched:
Between two states, both calamitous
بَينَbetween هجرانٍestrangement وَبُعدand distance أَجَّجاthey both kindled
فيin بَناتِdaughters (veins) القَلبِof the heart ناراًa fire تَستَعِرblazes
between estrangement and distance, which have kindled
Between estrangement and remoteness which ignited
a blazing fire within the heart's veins.
Fires aflame in the heart's depths
إِجعَليmake نَفسَكِyourself ليfor me ناصِرَةًa helper
لَستُI am not إِلَّاexcept بِكِthrough you مِنكُمagainst you اِنتَصَرprevail
Make yourself my champion;
Make yourself an ally for me
only through you can I prevail against you.
Through you alone from you will I prevail
إِنَّindeed فيin الهَجرِestrangement لَداءًsurely a disease مُعضَلاًintractable
وَلَداءُand surely the disease الحُبِّof love أَدهىmore dire وَأَمَرand more bitter
Indeed, in estrangement lies an intractable disease,
In estrangement there is complex malady
yet love's disease is more dire and more bitter.
And love's illness is most severe
