إِذ لَم يَقُل إِنَّني مِن سادَةِ العَرَبِ
He crept toward a sanctuary—how foolish he was!
To Mecca the stupid man came not knowing
Since he did not say, “I am one of the lords of the Arabs.”
That I am of Arabic nobility
أَكانَwas he? أَعجَزُless capable مِنthan قَومٍpeople رَأَيتُهُمُI saw them

تَسَوَّروا بَعدَ ما شابوا عَلى الحَسَبِ
Was he less capable than people I saw
Was he more helpless than a people I saw
who, after growing gray, clambered into noble lineage?
Who boasted of pedigree in their old age
