أَلَمhave ... not? تَرَyou seen أَنَّthat خَيرَthe best of النَّاسِpeople أَودىhas perished
فَياso, O للنَّاسpeople, called upon for help للحَدَثfor the calamity العَظيمِgreat
Have you not seen that the best of men has perished?
Have you not seen that the best of people are most benevolent
So, O people, alas for this great calamity!
So woe to people for the momentous event
جَزاكَmay He reward you اللَّهُGod يَومَon the day فَقَدتَyou were lost عَنّاfrom us
جَزاءَthe reward of الوالِدِthe father البَرِّkind الرَّحيمِmerciful
May God reward you, on the day you were lost to us,
May Allah reward you on the day we lost you
With the reward due a kind and merciful father.
With the reward of the righteous and merciful parent
وُليتَyou were appointed ruler فَلَمand did not تَزَلyou cease حَيّاًalive وَمَيتاًand dead
عَلىon نَهجِthe course of الطَّريقِthe path المُستَقيمِstraight
You were appointed ruler and remained, in life and death,
If only you had lived, and even when deceased
On the course of the straight path.
Followed the straight path as you did in life
وَوَلَّيتَand you entrusted الخِلافَةَthe caliphate سايسيهاits governors
فَلاso neither حكشḤaksh وَلاnor اِبنson of أَبيAbī (father of) حَكيمِḤakīm
And you entrusted the caliphate to its governors—
You entrusted the caliphate to one fit to rule it
Thus, neither Ḥaksh nor Ibn Abī Ḥakīm.
Not Hakim’s son nor a Habashi usurper
