أَلَمdid … not? تَعجَبyou marvel لِمُكتَئِبٍat a dejected person حَزينٍsorrowful
حَليفَan ally of صَبابَةٍardent longing وَخَدَّينِand a close companion of صَبرِpatience
Have you not marveled at a dejected, sorrowful man,
An ally of ardent longing and a close companion of patience,
يَقولُhe says إِذاwhen سَأَلتyou ask بِهِabout him بِخَيرٍwell
وَكَيفَand how يَكونُis مَهجورone forsaken بِخَيرِwell
Who says, when you ask after him, “I am well”?
And how can one forsaken be well?
