لَيتَwould that شِعريmy knowledge وَذاكَand that عِنديin my view عَيبٌa fault
كَيفَhow يَحياlives مُباعَدٌkept at a distance مَهجورُforsaken
Would that I knew—and that, to me, is a fault—
How one kept distant and forsaken can live.
عاقَبَتنيshe punished me عَلىfor الَّذيthat which اِجتَرَمَتهُshe committed it
وَتَوَلَّتand she turned away وَذُنبُهاand her sin مَغفورُforgiven
She punished me for what she herself had committed,
And turned away, though her sin was forgiven.
جَعَلَتshe placed بَينَناbetween us الوِصالَunion وَنادَتand she cried out
بِاِختِيالٍhaughtily ياO هَجرناour estrangement مَنصورُvictorious
She placed union between us and cried out
Haughtily, “O our estrangement, you are victorious!”
لَوif بِناin us قُوَّةٌstrength سَعيناwe would strive عَلَيهاagainst her
كَيفَhow وَالقَلبُand the heart عِندَهاin her keeping مَحصورُheld captive
Had we the strength, we would strive against her;
But how, when the heart is held captive in her keeping?
