O Bāyakhast, are you not the meanest of all those created

by the Lord of the Throne, among humans and jinn?

    You fed us year-old kashliyya

    and flatbreads blackened in color,

stored away—but at his daughters’ circumcision—

then passed down from the circumciser’s leftovers.

Until the table lay bare—though never

had my table been bare, even when food was scarce.

But your hand upon the table, having thrust

onto it the [meanest?] palm and fingers,

is a rook mowing down scattered pawns

far from the two knights and the vizier.

And if you break a water jar of Bāyakhast’s,

Kaʿūb comes with two sticks in her hand.
