أَعزِزHow grievous it is عَلَيَّto me بِأَنat the fact that تَكونَyou should be عَليلاill
أَوor أَنthat يَكونَshould be بِكَin you السِّقامُthe sickness نَزيلاa lodger
How grievous it is to me that you should be ill,
How grievous it is to me that you should be ill,
or that sickness should lodge within you.
Or that sickness should take up lodging in you.
وَوَدِدتُand I wished أَنِّيthat I مالِكٌam master لِسَلامَتيof my health
فَأعيركاهاso I might lend it to you بُكرَةًin the morning وَأَصيلاand in the evening
I wished that I were master of my own health,
And I wish I were master of my health,
then I would lend it to you, morning and evening,
So I could lend it to you, morning and evening.
فَتَكونthen you would تَسعىgo about سالِماًhealthy بِسَلامَتيwith my health
وَأَكونُand I would be مِمّاfor what قَدalready عَراكَhas befallen you بَديلاa substitute
so you might go about in health, through my health,
Then you would go about well, with my health,
and I would take the place of what afflicted you.
And I would bear in your stead what has befallen you.
وَأَناand I أَخٌa brother لَكَto you أَشتَكيI suffer ماwhat تَشتَكيyou suffer
وَكَذاand so الخَليلُthe close friend إِذاwhen أَجَلَّholds in high esteem خَليلاa close friend
I am your brother: I suffer what you suffer;
And I am a brother to you, suffering what you suffer;
that is how a true friend is, when he holds a friend dear.
And so is a close friend when he holds a friend dear.
