Nothing has changed the deserted campsite and its old dwellings
Nothing has changed the campsite and the dwellings
except the vicissitudes of time.
except the vicissitudes of time.
ياO صاحِبَيَّmy two companions وَأَنتماand you both ليto me
كَمَوضِعِlike the position of الكَفِّthe palm مِنin relation to بَنانيmy fingers
O my two companions—you are to me
O my two companions, you are to me
as the palm is to my fingers—
as the palm is to my fingers.

stop beside me and let me enjoy your company;
Stop beside me and give me joy,

or, if not, go on and bid me farewell.

Do not hurry me and thereby inflame me;
Do not hurry me, lest you goad me;
what concerns you today is not what concerns me.
your concern today is not mine.

إِنِّيindeed I وَإِيّاكَand you موثِقانِboth bound
O gazelle whose tethering cords lie in an open plain,
O gazelle whose ropes are on a plain,
surely you and I are both bound.
indeed, you and I are both bound.

It saddens me to see you reaching
It saddens me to see you reach out
toward them from it, while you are captive.
toward me from them, while you are captive.

Indeed, beautiful women—and everything

said of beautiful women, accept it—

with a single glance from lovely eyes.
with a glance of their lovely eyes.
