لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed قَرَّتfound delight عُيونٌeyes رَأَيتُهاI saw them
لَعَمري لَقَد قَرَّت عُيونٌ رَأَيتُها
وَلكِنَّbut عَينيmy eye لَمnot تُمَتَّعwas granted enjoyment مِنَfrom النَّظَرgazing
وَلكِنَّ عَيني لَم تُمَتَّع مِنَ النَّظَر
By my life, eyes I have seen have found delight;
By my life! Eyes I have seen
Yet my eye was not granted the pleasure of gazing.
But mine were not sated by the sight
إِذاwhen سَخِطَتshe became angry أَومَتshe signaled إِلىto الدَّهرِTime بِالَّذيwith what
إِذا سَخِطَت أَومَت إِلى الدَّهرِ بِالَّذي
تُحاوِلُهُshe seeks to accomplish it فِيَّto me فَلمso did not يَعصِهاdisobey her القَدَرFate
تُحاوِلُهُ فِيَّ فَلم يَعصِها القَدَر
When she is angry, she signals to Time what
When she is wrathful she inclines fate itself
She seeks to do to me, and Fate does not disobey her.
To do her bidding against me, which it never disobeyed
وَلاand no عَيبَfault إِلَّاexcept أَنَّهاthat she is بَشَرِيَّةٌhuman
وَلا عَيبَ إِلَّا أَنَّها بَشَرِيَّةٌ
فَلَولاهُand were it not for that كانَتshe would be ثالِثa third الشَّمسِthe sun وَالقَمَرand the moon
فَلَولاهُ كانَت ثالِث الشَّمسِ وَالقَمَر
And she has no fault except that she is human;
No fault in her but she's only human
But for that, she would be a third beside the sun and moon.
Else she'd be third to sun and moon in rank
لَئِنeven if كانَhad أَشقىmade wretched اللَّهُGod قَوماًsome people بِحُبِّهِمthrough their love
لَئِن كانَ أَشقى اللَّهُ قَوماً بِحُبِّهِم
فَقَدthen indeed أَسعَدَmade happy اللَّهُGod المُحِبَّthe lover إِذاwhen قَدَرis able
فَقَد أَسعَدَ اللَّهُ المُحِبَّ إِذا قَدَر
Even if God has made some people wretched through their love,
If God afflicted a people with love for her
God has indeed made the lover happy when love is within his reach.
Then God has blessed the lover when He ordained
