سَلask دِيارَthe dwellings الحَيِّthe tribe ماwhat غَيَّرَهاchanged them
سَل دِيارَ الحَيِّ ما غَيَّرَها
وَمَحاهاand effaced them وَمَحاand effaced مَنظَرَهاtheir appearance
وَمَحاها وَمَحا مَنظَرَها
Ask the tribe's dwellings what has changed them
Ask the dwellings of the living what has changed them,
And effaced them and effaced their appearance.
And erased them, and erased their aspect;
وَهيَand they اللاتيthose that إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle اِنقَلَبَتthey change
وَهيَ اللاتي إِذا ما اِنقَلَبَت
صَيَّرَتthey turn مَعروفَهاwhat is familiar in them مُنكَرَهاwhat is strange in them
صَيَّرَت مَعروفَها مُنكَرَها
And they are those that, whenever they change,
They who, when they have been transformed,
Turn what is familiar in them into what is strange.
Turn their good into evil.
إِنَّماonly الدُّنياthe world كَظِلٍّlike a shadow زائِلٍpassing
إِنَّما الدُّنيا كَظِلٍّ زائِلٍ
نَحمَدُwe praise اللَّهَGod كَذاthus قَدَّرَهاHe ordained it
نَحمَدُ اللَّهَ كَذا قَدَّرَها
The world is but like a passing shadow;
Verily the life of this world is only like a shadow that passes away.
We praise God; thus has He ordained it.
We praise God who has decreed it thus.
