مَجلِسُa gathering صَبَّينِtwo lovesick ones مُحِبَّينِtwo lovers
مَجلِسُ صَبَّينِ مُحِبَّينِ
لَيساthey both are not مِنَof الحُبِّlove بِخَلوَينِboth free
لَيسا مِنَ الحُبِّ بِخَلوَينِ
A gathering of two lovesick lovers,
Neither is free of love.
قَدalready صَيَّراthey both made روحَيهِماtheir two souls واحِداًone
قَد صَيَّرا روحَيهِما واحِداً
فَاِقتَسَماهُso they both shared it بَينَbetween جِسمَينِtwo bodies
فَاِقتَسَماهُ بَينَ جِسمَينِ
They have made their two souls one,
Then shared it between two bodies.
تَنازَعاthey both passed back and forth كَأساًa cup عَلىwith لذَّةٍdelight
تَنازَعا كَأساً عَلى لذَّةٍ
قَدalready مازَجاهاthey both mingled it بَينَbetween دَمعَينِtwo tears
قَد مازَجاها بَينَ دَمعَينِ
They passed a cup between them in delight,
Having mingled it with tears from both.
وَالكَأسُand the cup لاnot تَحسُنُis pleasing إِلَّاexcept إِذاwhen
وَالكَأسُ لا تَحسُنُ إِلَّا إِذا
أَدَرتَهاyou pass it around بَينَbetween مُحِبَّينِtwo lovers
أَدَرتَها بَينَ مُحِبَّينِ
And the cup is pleasing only when
You pass it between two lovers.
