الوَيلُwoe إِنif كانَwas الفراقُparting دَناdrew near
وَصَلَّيتُand I was scorched مِنهُby it بِحَرِّby the heat of ماwhat كَمَناlay hidden
Woe, if parting has drawn near,
Alas, if parting has drawn near,
and I was scorched by the heat of what lay concealed within it.
and I have been scorched by it, by the heat of what lay hidden.
كُنَّاwe were وَنَحنُwhile we مَعاًtogether تَسكُنُهyou soothe it
فَالآنَso now يَنفُرُtakes fright أَنbecause أَخىmy brother شَطَناwent far away
We were together, and you dwelt in it;
When we were together, you would soothe it;
but now it recoils because my brother has gone far from us.
so now it takes fright, for my brother has gone far away.
أَستَحفظُI ask to safeguard اللَّهَGod السَّميعَthe All-Hearing لَهُfor him
إِمَّاwhether أَقامَhe stayed بِناwith us وَإِنand if ظَعَناhe departed
I ask God, the All-Hearing, to watch over him,
I ask God, the All-Hearing, to keep him safe,
whether he stays with us or journeys away.
whether he stays with us or journeys away.
لكِنَّنيbut I مَيتٌdead لَئِنif indeed شَحَطَتgrew distant
عَنّيfrom me نَواهُhis separation وَلَمand not يَكُنbe قُمناfitting; worthy
Yet I shall die if there grows distant
But I shall die if it stretches far
from me his dwelling, though we have not even set out.
from me—his separation—though that would not be fitting.
ياO مَنyou who بَرانيwore me away حُسنُthe beauty of صورَتهhis form
هَلwas there كانَwas قَبلَكbefore you آخرanother حسناbeautiful
O you whose beauty of form has worn me thin,
O you whose beautiful form has worn me away,
was there before you ever another so fair?
was anyone else beautiful before you?
ماnot إِنever (emphatic) سَمِعتُI heard بِهِof him فَأَذكُرُهُso I might mention him
وَلَقَدand indeed عُنيتُI was concerned بِعِلمِهِwith knowledge of him زَمَناfor some time
Never did I hear of him, that I might mention him,
I have never heard of him, that I might mention him,
though indeed for a time I took pains to learn of him.
and I have sought to learn of him for some time.
