O son of caliphs and kings, if their lineage is traced,

You gained the caliphate from your forefathers of old.

Have you acted unjustly, or have your eyes slept through a strange affair

In which mankind is gripped by fear and alarm?

You entrusted four together with the people's affairs,

And each gathers firewood for a trapper's rope.

Here is Sulayman: you have given his palm dominion over

The earth's eastern regions, both plain and mountain.

You made him lord of Sindh, then al-Shihrayn, from Aden

To al-Jazira, then the outlying reaches of Malal.

A caliphate he alone possessed; thus were enforced

His decrees concerning the people's blood and spoils.

And Ibn al-Khasib, whose palm you have granted

Caliphal rule over Syria, the campaigning and returning troops.

So Egypt's Nile and Syria's sea have both flowed

With whatever wealth and robes he desired.

As though, in what you divided among them, they were

Al-Rashid's sons when the realms were apportioned.

Sulayman possessed what al-Amin had [possessed],

Of caliphal power and the fulfillment of hope.

And Ahmad ibn Khasib, in his governorship,

Is like al-Qasim ibn al-Rashid, who brings the roads together.

Now no sincere adviser comes to you in secret,

Nor openly, for fear of plots.

Ask your treasury where the money is, and you will find out.

And ask your land-tax revenues about your great sums of money.

How many in your prisons have committed no offense—

Captives of falsehood, in fetters and heavy shackles!

    قِس الأُمورَ الَّتي تُنَجي مِنَ الزَّلَلِ

    You were named after al-Rashid, deemed worthy of that name;

Weigh the measures that save you from missteps.

Wreak havoc among them as his two hands together did

Against the Barmakids, demolishing the summits.
