نَبَأnews أَتىcame مِنfrom أَعظَمِthe greatest of الأَنبِياءِthe prophets
نَبَأ أَتى مِن أَعظَمِ الأَنبِياءِ
لَمّاwhen أَلَمَّstruck مُقَلقِلُshaker of الأَحشاءِthe entrails
لَمّا أَلَمَّ مُقَلقِلُ الأَحشاءِ
News came from the greatest of prophets;
A news came from the greatest of prophets
when it struck, it shook the entrails.
When the shaker of inner thoughts pained me
قالواthey said حَبيبHabib قَدindeed ثَوىdied فَأَجَبتُهُمso I answered them
قالوا حَبيب قَد ثَوى فَأَجَبتُهُم
ناشَدتُكُمI adjure you لاdo not تَجعَلوهُmake him الطَّائيal-Ta’i
ناشَدتُكُم لا تَجعَلوهُ الطَّائي
They said, “Habib has died,” and I answered them:
They said: the beloved has passed away, so I responded:
“I adjure you—do not let him be al-Ta’i.”
I implore you, do not make him wander
