أَأَحياshall I live? بَعدَafter صَدِّكyour rejection of me إِنsurely عُمريmy life
لَعَمرُكَby your life بَعدَafter ذاthis عُمرٌa life طَويلُlong
Shall I live on after your rejection? Truly, my life—
Shall I live after your rejection? Surely my life—
by your life—is, after this, a life too long.
by your life—is a long life after this.
I have been worn down عَلىover مُطاوَلَةthe long duration of اللَّياليthe nights
وَحُبُّكand love for you ماnot يمحُّwears away وَماand not يَزولُvanishes
I have been tried by having to outlast the nights,
I have been worn down over the long course of nights,
while love of you neither slackens nor departs.
and my love for you neither wears away nor vanishes.
رَأَيتُكَI saw you قَدalready عَقَدتَyou resolved عَلىupon جَفائيshunning me
كَأَنَّas though زِيارَتيmy visit ذَنبٌa sin جَليلُgrave
I see that you have resolved to shun me,
I saw that you had resolved to shun me,
as though my visiting you were a grievous sin.
as though my visit were a grave sin.
سِهامُarrows المَوتِof death مُقبِلَةٌapproaching وَإِنِّيand indeed I
أَرىI see أَنِّيthat I لِأَوَّلِهاby the first of them قَتيلُslain
The arrows of death are advancing—and I
Death's arrows are approaching, and indeed I
believe the very first of them will strike me dead.
see that I shall be slain by the first of them.
