We cured the delay with success,

and brought it to you at a run:

a dark-red wine that wafts musk

    when its seal is broken.

And you seek no worldly gain through it,

nor make a loan of it,

    O God—unless

the loan is something you accept.

For people are those who chance upon

    something pleasant and fresh,

    and especially when it is

    something white and tender.

And if you wish, then thanks

    from you, immediate and fresh,

are enough, so long as they are no torrent

rushing down upon us from you.

For we cannot, in this matter,

rise to the task when you claim it as due.

    And who can repay

    thanks that fill the earth?

    Yet we have imitated you

in what we use to discharge our duty:

with the very act of giving and beneficence,

    with praise that meets approval.

So this repays you in part,

and that repays you in part.

Otherwise, I fear we may be ruined

by the debt, which will then go unpaid.
