Suppose what I conceal has become public,

and emerged and spread, just as it had lain hidden.

Is there between that and this

    anything but death or sorrow?

    وَاِرفِق فديتُك بي وَلَن

    Do not let my passion vex you;

and be gentle with me—may I be your ransom—and be tender.

For I have granted you a place

in my heart, beyond all price.

As for me, I must die,

and not be abased; so do not be abased.

My ribs have traversed love of you,

so they spoke of you, voicing what I conceal.

    O you whose face's charms

are contagious, and whom Beauty envies!

If you do not see me speaking

of you in love till the end of time,

    then shelter me—may I be your ransom—from a love

that has lain hidden beneath my ribs.
