Have you not seen that one thing is the cause of another,
Have you not seen that everything has a cause
which arises from it, like fire kindled with a fire-stick?
That ignites it like fire sparked by flint?
كَذلِكَlikewise جَرَّبناwe tested الأُمورَaffairs وَإِنَّماand only

Thus have we tested affairs; it is only
Thus we have tested matters, and indeed
what happened before that shows you what lies far ahead.
What has passed indicates what is yet to come.

My belief about Ibrahim is that his position
And my thoughts of Ibrahim are that his place
will one day revive the like of his ill-starred days.
Will one day rise again, like his arduous days.

I saw Husayn when Muhammad came
I saw Hussein when Muhammad had no protection,
into his hands without safe-conduct or covenant.
No pact in his hands or covenant.

Had he driven the sword into him with a blow
Had he but struck with his sword one fatal blow
that left him on the flat ground, his cheek dust-smeared,
That would have left him prone, cheek dragging the ground.

then the troops would have had nothing left of him;
Were there no soldiers left for him to command,
for what you were told of the troops did indeed happen.
Then the news I received of the troops would be confirmed.

They killed him after killing thirty thousand for him,
thirty thousand mature men and beardless youths.
Veterans and youths.

They did not support him for a favor he had done before,
They did not help him against the hands that betrayed him,
nor did they kill him that day out of rancor.
Nor did they kill him that day out of hatred.

Rather, it was blatant treachery, and fickleness of
But it was blatant treachery, reckless minds,
judgment, and thought far from the paths of moderation.
And an opinion far removed from the path of integrity.
فَذلِكَthat, then يَومٌa day كانَwas لِلنَّاسِfor the people عِبرَةًa warning

That was a day that served the people as a warning,
Thus it was a day that would serve as a lesson for all people
one that will endure like an inscription in solid stone.
Remaining like the inscriptions on tablets of stone.

And Ibrahim's day, if his life is long,
And the day of Ibrahim—no matter how long he lives—
is, to my mind, no farther off in calamity than his day.
Will not be more hateful to me than his day.

Remember, Commander of the Faithful, his uprising
I remember the Commander of the Faithful, upright
and his faith, both in his jesting and in earnest.
In jest and earnest.

Now, by Him whose caliph I have come to serve as a slave,
By Him in whose service I have risen this morning
to whom belongs the best faith of caliph and slave—
As a servant succeeding the Caliph,
إِذاwhen هَزَّhe shook أَعوادَthe timbers of المَنابِرthe pulpits باستِهِwith his buttocks

when he shook the pulpits' timbers with his buttocks,
None surpasses the Commander's sincere faith,
he sang of Layla, or Mayya, or Hind.
Whether lord or vassal.
وَوَاللَّهِand by God ماnot مِنany تَوْبَةٍrepentance نَزَعَتْdrew بِهِhim along

And by God, no repentance drew him
Willingly he came to you of his own accord,
toward you, nor inclination toward you, nor affection.
Though against his wishes, with God claiming all praise.
وَلكِنَّbut إِخلاصَsincerity of الضَّميرِinward intent مُقَرَّبa means of approach

إِلىto اللَّهِGod زُلفىa close approach لاnot تخيبُdisappoints وَلاnor تكْديproves fruitless
Rather, sincerity of inward intent is a means of drawing near
So do not leave any room for doubt among the people,
to God—a nearness that neither disappoints nor fails.
For you will recompense according to what you dispense.
أَتاكَhe came to you بِهِwith him طَوْعاًsubmissively إِلَيكَtoward you بِأَنفِهِby his nose

He brought him to you submissive, led toward you by his nose,
They have certainly wrongly accused people in a case like his,
against his will; and God alone claimed the praise.
With no son of al-Mansur’s nor of al-Mahdi’s.
فَلاso do not تَترُكَنْever leave لِلنَّاسِfor the people مَوضِعَa ground for شُبهَةٍdoubt

Leave the people no grounds for doubt,
How then with one whom all the people pledged allegiance,
for you are repaid according to what you bestow.
And riders from the deserts to Najd responded to his oath of fealty?
فَقَدfor indeed غَلَطواthey erred لِلنَّاسِfor the people فيin نَصْبٍinstalling مِثلهhis like

They have erred in setting up for the people someone like him,
One whose appointment as Caliph was stamped with approval,
and someone who is no son of al-Mansur or al-Mahdi.
And who was proclaimed among the high nobility?
فَكَيفَso how بِمَنabout one whom قَدalready بايَعَpledged allegiance to النَّاسُthe people وَالتَقَتْand met

What, then, of one to whom the people pledged allegiance, and for whom
What man ever aspired to it and then relinquished it
riders from Ghawr to Najd met in allegiance?
Until he passed away and was buried in a grave?
وَمَنand one whose صَكَّstruck تَسليمُthe salutation of الخِلافَةِthe caliphate سَمعَهُhis hearing

And one whose hearing was struck by the caliphal salutation,
Yet they claim for the likes of him leadership,
hailed with it between the two ranks from afar?
To guide them in what they disclose and conceal!
وَأَيُّand what اِمرئٍman سامىraised high بِهاthrough it قَطُّever نَفْسَهُhimself

What man has ever raised himself so high through it,
They say he is a Sunni, but what tradition
then parted from it before vanishing into the grave?
Is upheld by the likes of blue eyed Sa’al, the shifty one?
وَترجمُand conjectures هذيthis النَّابتيَّةَNabitiyya أَنَّهُthat he

And this Nabitiyya group claims that he
And they have made the food allowed in his time
is its imam, in what it conceals and what it reveals.
A leader for them, along with the lucky constellation.

They say, “A Sunni!” But what tradition
Whenever they see a day of high prices, you see them
can be upheld by a dark-skinned man, thin of nape and neck?
Yearning for those days, filled with regret.
وَقَدand indeed جَعَلواthey made رُخْصَthe cheapness of الطَّعامِfood بِعَهدِهِin his time

They have made the cheapness of food in his time
And he came on the day of Eid leading hyenas around him,
their guarantee of good fortune and an auspicious star.
The snorting of steeds, and the clanging of coat mail.

When one day they see high prices, you see them
With horsemen walking about in chainmail behind him
yearning deeply for that time.
Bearing staffs and spears.
وَأَقبَلَand he came forth يَومَon the day of العيدِthe feast يوجِفُsurges حَوْلَهُaround him

He came forth on the feast day, around him surging
If you say that others have sought the Caliphate
the pounding of steeds and the clash of smooth lances.
Yet were not granted what they strove hard to obtain,
وَرجّالَةٌand foot soldiers يَمشونَwalk فيin البيضِhelmets دونَهُbefore him

And foot soldiers walked in helmets before him,
I do not fault him whose endeavor God foiled
and they followed him with the staff and the mantle.
For being mistaken since he did so deliberately.
فَإِنْso if قُلتَyou say قَدindeed رامَsought الخِلافَةَthe caliphate غَيرُهُanother

If you say, “Another sought the caliphate,
Nor am I pleased after forgiveness unless I supply him,
but was granted no good fortune in what he attempted;
For the bitten one is more deserving of shelter and care.
فَلَمso did not أجزِهِI punish him إِذwhen خَيَّبَthwarted اللَّهُGod سَعيَهُhis endeavor

so I did not punish him, when God thwarted his endeavor,
One who was cast out by the foolishness of others' opinions
for a wrong that he had committed deliberately;
Is not the same as one whose own reasoning led him astray.
وَلَمand not أَرضَI was content بَعدَafter العَفوِpardoning حَتّىuntil رَفَدتُهُI aided him

A gang of bandits assisted him,
and surely the uncle deserves more forbearance and aid”:
Just to importune, never to export him from exile.

With you and the glorious fathers before you.

That they were most fond of him.

Your retainer is his retainer, and your troops are his troops;
They say, "Do not distance yourself from the son of a freedwoman,
does the smith put two swords in one scabbard?
Forbearing, though it wearied his soul, a man of great resilience."

It has troubled me, concerning your household, that I
So he drew near and his soul became cheap to attain our kingdom,
have seen their affection for him—such affection!
At that time when few would sacrifice themselves.

Ali ibn Musa was given the succession to the Caliphate.

None but he refused that injustice,
to him, at a time when few would offer ransom.
But to accept or reject was enough for us.

At a time when the people offered their palms in sincere allegiance
And Ibrahim readied himself for death,
to Ali ibn Musa as heir apparent,
Bearing arms above a breast bursting with resolve.

but he sufficed for us in acceptance and refusal.
Of his affair is not to be blamed, even if he falls short.

Ibrahim laid himself bare to death,
These are matters those hesitant to face evil
and displayed his weapons on a spirited, sturdy steed.

their consequences. May God guide you to sound judgment.
