ياO عُذرُʿUdhr زُيِّنَwas adorned بِاِسمِكَby your name العُذرُthe excuse
يا عُذرُ زُيِّنَ بِاِسمِكَ العُذرُ
وَأَساءَand did harm وَلَمand did not يُحسِنdo good بِكَto you الدَّهرُtime
وَأَساءَ وَلَم يُحسِن بِكَ الدَّهرُ
O ʿUdhr, excuse has been adorned by your name;
O excuse adorned with your name, excuse,
And time has wronged you and shown you no kindness.
Though time did you wrong and acted not right,
وَهيَand she الَّتيwho قالَتshe said وَقَدand already جَعَلَتbegan
وَهيَ الَّتي قالَت وَقَد جَعَلَت
تنسلُّslip away منfrom وجناتِهاher cheeks الجَمرُthe embers
تنسلُّ من وجناتِها الجَمرُ
And she is the one who said, as there began
And she who said, making,
To slip from her cheeks the embers:
Embers slip out of her cheeks,
اكمدpine away بِدائِكَwith your affliction هَلquestion marker رَأَيتَyou have seen كَذاsuch
اكمد بِدائِكَ هَل رَأَيتَ كَذا
بَدراًa full moon يَلوحُshines بِخَدِّهِon his cheek البَدرُthe full moon
بَدراً يَلوحُ بِخَدِّهِ البَدرُ
Pine away with your affliction! Have you seen such
Restrain your affliction, did you ever see
A full moon, on whose cheek the full moon shines?
A full moon shining with its cheeks, the full moon?
