I read your verses—lawful magic—and so do not
I read your magical, lawful verses and did not know

Whether it was the breeze of musk or the morning breeze of Saba

A poem—Shīn, Ṣād, Lām—its splendor;
An ode whose beginning letter is Sheen then Saad has delighted me
O eye of one accustomed to excellence whenever he writes!
O eye of whoever composed beautiful poems when he wrote

Verse rhyming in yā—if I were to dot it
If I were to point out its imagery with a dot from my heart
with the dot of my heart, I would not have paid what was due.
I would not have fulfilled what was required

It has set the servant's tears flowing,
It turned the tears of the slave into flowing
in longing toward—toward Egypt's foremost man, whose sea has grown sweet.
Yearning for the breast of Egypt whose water is sweet

This is guidance, yet its splendor has led my heart astray,
This is a gift that has misled my heart with its delight
and it became like a lover: passion enticed it, and it yearned.
So it became like the pouring rain that the passion has poured

It has become infatuated in every valley seeking
its fruits and shunning the words of reproach.

Cast off your clothes because of them, fleeing headlong.
Take off your clothes filled with purpose, fleeing

You have renewed the morals of a people after they were forgotten
and the finer of its two halves is not the one that has passed.
So the best half of it that went away

O you who bind poetry to religious law's command without ostentation,
O composer of poetry, the command of law comes before vanity
do you not fear usury with those who match your measure?
Do you not beware of those who weighed you down with usury?

Unless you have preceded them, piercing through the veils

And if they compete with prose, scatter it as dust

O how fine a subject from whom time has recoiled!
What an excellent subject when time proclaimed about him

For it? There is no blame if we kiss and embrace
