كاتبْتَني وأذنتَ لي بكتابةٍ
منيfrom me إليكَto you لقدْindeed فُتنتI was captivated فُتوناutterly
مني إليكَ لقدْ فُتنت فُتونا
You wrote to me and gave me leave to write
You wrote to me, granting me leave
From me to you—indeed, I was utterly captivated!
To write back from me to you - I'm smitten, smitten so!
ياO مالكيmy owner بجميلِهِthrough his kindness منْwho ذاthat one رأىhas seen
يا مالكي بجميلِهِ منْ ذا رأى
عَبْداًa slave سوايَother than me مكاتباًcorresponding مأذوناgranted permission
عَبْداً سوايَ مكاتباً مأذونا
O you who own me through your kindness, who has ever seen
My master, who has seen with his eyes
A slave other than me, both corresponding and granted permission?
A servant like me, permitted to correspond?
