ليالي وصلِنا بالرقمتينِ
With short rhymed utterances, it recalls
With short rhymed prose it tells
The nights of our union at al-Raqmatayn.
Of the nights we connected by two eyelids
فإنand if يَرَهاhe sees it ابنُson of مُقْلَةMuqla قالhe says عنهاof it
فإن يَرَها ابنُ مُقْلَة قال عنها
فداؤُكِa ransom for you مقلتايَmy two eyes (a pun on Muqla) أبيmy father وعينيand my eye
فداؤُكِ مقلتايَ أبي وعيني
And if Ibn Muqla sees it, he says of it:
If the son of Muqlla sees them, he would say about them
“May my two Muqlas—my father and my eye—be your ransom.”
You are the ransom for my two eyelids, my father and my eyes
