Why did you wish to forsake me—why?

And with separation awaken a sleeping household?

Perhaps, O hard-hearted one, you seek

a departure that sends tears streaming,

and leave us without a man of standing

whom we consult whenever we seek an aim.

Would you take from us our means of recognition?

And by it I do not mean an alif and a lam.

Have you encountered sorrows in Aleppo,

so that, in distress, you resolve to leave its environs?

And from among us, toward al-Shahba, there have always been

notables of Banu Abi Bakr aspiring upward.

They gained from it more than they hoped,

and never once faulted its pledge of protection.

So do not take Damascus as a replacement for it.

Is that anger on your part, or revenge?

And if you care nothing for separation,

this keeps sleep from the eye.

And if you depart to gain wealth, it is easy

to become wealthy here if you stay a year.

And if you depart seeking perfect standing,

then stop: I warn you against perfection.

And if you depart in hopes of fame,

how often fame weakens the bones!

    سبقْتَ بهِ الفرادى والتؤاما

    And generosity and learning are fame enough for you;

through it you have outstripped the lone and the paired.

Stay among your kin in ease and comfort,

at my bidding, and make the very most of that.

For loyalty belongs to kin; even if someone else

keeps faith with you by inclusion, he betrays you by entailment.

For a covetous man's provision is not increased,

even if he crosses deserts and hills.

Do you depart to gain an ignoble brother,

    having forsaken your noble brothers?

If you will not accept your kin as neighbors,

then bring your tents close to their tents,

so that the news-bearer may reach you from nearby,

and you may breathe in lavender from your native haunts.

For excessive distance from homeland and kin

is death before you meet death.

So do not listen to words from so-and-so,

for you will hear no meaningful speech from him.

    وإنْ همْ خاطبوكَ فقلْ سلاما

    And do not act foolishly because of others' folly;

and if they address you, say, 'Peace.'

For many an envier weeps in secret

and shows a smile when you meet him.

And not every man is a sincere brother

to his companion, even if he prays and fasts.

So may you never believe a liar's words,

nor trust one who has eaten what is forbidden.

And do not exalt an enemy who died of rage

at the fame of our excellence, and hoped for our defeat.

And how do you rise in reverence for one

who stands long in the service of learning?

Our staying is harder on our enemies

and burns more fiercely in their hearts.

Have we taken King Alexander as our model,

so that we do not stay long in any land?

And indeed, if you depart, you depart—but

you leave our family behind like orphans.

    فلا تجعلْ تشتّتنا الختاما

    Losing our brothers was enough for us at the start;

so do not make our dispersal the ending.
