مَنْwhoever وليَtakes charge of الحسبةَthe office of public oversight يصبرْmust be patient علىin the face of
مَنْ وليَ الحسبةَ يصبرْ على
تعرُّضِharassment الواقفِthe bystander والسائرِand the passerby
تعرُّضِ الواقفِ والسائرِ
Whoever takes charge of the ḥisba must patiently endure
Whoever takes charge of public oversight must endure
the objections of all who stand and all who pass by;
the harassment of bystanders and passersby;
فليسَfor … not يحظىis favored بالمنىwith wishes fulfilled والغنىand wealth
فليسَ يحظى بالمنى والغنى
فيهمamong them سوىexcept المحتسبِthe public inspector الصابرِthe patient one
فيهم سوى المحتسبِ الصابرِ
for none attains his hopes and prosperity
for no one attains his wishes and wealth
among them save the patient muḥtasib.
