Whoever seeks to sip the moisture of dusky lips
Whoever aspires to drink from the water of virtue
must endure in love when he has afflicted
Must be patient in love, however painful

My love for the one who blamed me and the one who blamed me not
the snares of a glance and drew a blade.
A glance from whose eyelids was healing for me

فؤاديَ المضنى بلي بل بلا
And after he enslaved me with love, he unsettled
And after he brought me to the state of a nightingale
my exhausted heart: it wore out—rather, he wore it out.
My grieving heart went "balbala" without a companion

O my reproacher, gently! For what has harmed me
Oh you who blame me, be gentle, for indeed
is a hurt in my heart from his desertion.
What his estrangement caused in my heart was hurtful

I love one whose beautiful face was covered
with beauty, through which he delights in disparaging me.
With beauty that sweetens the wine cup for me

So he is wealthy, yet keeps putting me off;
He is always fulfilling my request
I have not attained my wish of kissing him.
Yet I have not attained my desire of kissing him

He surrendered my heart to the fire of passion;
My heart I have surrendered to the fire of passion
and if an unbeliever saw him, he would embrace Islam.
If an unbeliever saw him, he would become Muslim

I could not bear anyone who blamed me or carried tales;
I cannot bear the one who blamed me or strove against me
so, for once, offer fuller counsel to someone else.
So advise someone else at length

Those who did not pray for me and those who did are alike
It's the same, whether one prayed for me or not
concerning him who lodged an ember in my heart:
For my heart contains burning embers

a youth who dared to spill my blood
A man who was quick to shed my blood
and honored no earlier pledge to me.
And did not respect the covenant he made

No loss of my eye's sleep in him, nor
will any loyalty of mine to Ali be wasted.
Is a loss for me in Ali, no

He makes Yahya live beautifully, so how wonderful!
his effort to unfold what he had summarized!
His endeavor was to detail what is most wonderful

He sharpened the pens of high distinction and honed them;
He made sharp the pens of glorious things and let
so through him the eye of kingship rests in slumber.
The King's viewer through him have insight

That is God's bounty; He bestows it on whomever
That is the bounty of God, which He grants
He wills, granting a man favors without holding them over him.
To whom He wills, appointing a man without others

As for his two palms, whichever of them
His two hands are signs from the two of them
touches a rock, water flows from it.
That caused water to flow from the rock

The heights rave about him for his refinement,
With it he admonishes the lofty ones to refine themselves
and the tongues of the envious babble about him.
And the tongues of enviers admonish him

A youth like an elder, well proven by experience,
A young man whose experience is like that of an old man
the coursers of success race with him [final word uncertain].
The precedents of success flow through him

And time is a servant to his eminence, so it does not
Time is a slave to his ascendancy, so it does not
leave any mouth empty of praises for him.
Fail to praise him perpetually

Never has the sultan appointed, among his appointees,
None appointed by the Sultan in any position
the like of Ala al-Din, who banishes hardship.
Compares to Aladdin, who resolves troubles

O reviver of merit's vanished remembrance,
O you who revive merit and gold with mention
you fashion pearls for us, and we fashion gold.
You have laid down pearls for us, so we lay down gold

Your honoring me has brought bones back to life;
Your preparation has spread greater good for me
so it is fitting for me, by God, to extol you.
And by God I have every right to speak of it more
