مَنْwhoever رامَseeks طولَlength of العمرِlife يصبرْmust endure علىin the face of
مَنْ رامَ طولَ العمرِ يصبرْ على
مصائبٍcalamities أهونُهاthe least grievous of them ماwhat تراهْyou see it
مصائبٍ أهونُها ما تراهْ
Whoever seeks a long life must endure
Whoever desires a long life must be patient with
Calamities, the least grievous of which is what you see.
Afflictions, the least of which you see,
طالتْgrew long حياتيmy life فيin سوىother than طائلٍbenefit
طالتْ حياتي في سوى طائلٍ
حتىuntil رأيتُI saw القردَthe monkey قاضيjudge of القضاهthe judges
حتى رأيتُ القردَ قاضي القضاه
My life stretched on to no avail,
My life has been long in vain
Until I saw the monkey as chief judge.
Until I saw the monkey as the judge of judges
