مَنْwhoever رامَseeks طولَlength of العمرِlife يصبرْmust be patient علىin the face of
مَنْ رامَ طولَ العمرِ يصبرْ على
مصائبٍmisfortunes أهونُهاthe least grievous of them هذيthis
مصائبٍ أهونُها هذي
Whoever seeks a long life must endure
He who hopes for a lifelong serenity
misfortunes, the least grievous of which is this:
Will find the least of life's calamities ruinous
طالتْgrew long حياتيmy life فيin سوىother than طائلٍbenefit
طالتْ حياتي في سوى طائلٍ
حتىuntil رأيتُI saw القردَthe monkey أستاذيmy teacher
حتى رأيتُ القردَ أستاذي
My life has lengthened to no purpose,
My life has ebbed away, gaining me nothing
until I saw the monkey as my teacher.
Until I found myself taking lessons from a monkey
