When the reviled chamberlain departed Aleppo,
When the frowned-upon eyebrow departed Haleb
and the praised one remained there, my companion recited:
And the grateful one remained therein, my friend recited:
تبدَّتْshe appeared لناto us كالشمسlike the sun تحتَbeneath غمامةٍa cloud
تبدَّتْ لنا كالشمس تحتَ غمامةٍ
بداappeared حاجبٌan eyebrow منهاof her وضنَّتْand she was sparing بحاجبِwith an eyebrow
بدا حاجبٌ منها وضنَّتْ بحاجبِ
“She appeared to us like the sun beneath a cloud;
She appeared to us like the sun beneath a cloud,
one eyebrow of hers appeared, and she withheld the other.”
An eyebrow of hers showed, then she frowned with an eyebrow.
