قالواthey said يجوزُit is possible خمولُobscurity شخصٍa person فيin الصِّباyouth
قالوا يجوزُ خمولُ شخصٍ في الصِّبا
وعُلاهُand his eminence بعدَafter الشيبِgray hair قلتI said يجوزُit is possible
وعُلاهُ بعدَ الشيبِ قلت يجوزُ
They said, “A person may be obscure in youth
They said a young man's idleness is allowed
And rise to eminence after his hair turns gray.” I said, “That is possible:
And his wisdom comes after gray hair. I said:
كالخمرِlike wine ذَلَّتْshe was humbled فيin مبادئِthe beginnings of عمرِهاher life
كالخمرِ ذَلَّتْ في مبادئِ عمرِها
وتحكَّمَتْand she ruled فيover العقلِthe mind وهيwhile she is عجوزُan old woman
وتحكَّمَتْ في العقلِ وهي عجوزُ
Like wine, humbled at the beginning of her life,
It's like wine - it's gentle at the start of life
Yet ruling the mind when she is an old woman.”
But overpowers reason when it is old
