The nature of this wood is a wonder to me;
This lute's affair is wondrous unto me
were we to reverse it, we would excuse the one who did so.
Were we to change it, we'd exonerate he who changed it

Doves wailed upon it when it was green,
Green leaves upon it have become withered
and graceful women sang to its accompaniment when it was dry.
And dry branches upon it have become green
