لثغةُthe lisp مَنْthe one whom أهواهُI love him مِنْbecause of حسنِهاits beauty
عنديto me علىin الوجهينِboth senses محمولَهْacceptable
The lisp of the one I love, because of its beauty,
The lisp of my beloved is to my ears
is acceptable to me in either sense.
The sweetest melody that can be heard
قلتُI said سهامُthe arrows الطرفِof the gaze منسولةٌdrawn forth
لرميِto shoot قلبيmy heart قالhe said منثولَهْspilled out
I said, 'The arrows of the gaze are drawn forth
I said, "Her darting glances swift let loose
to shoot my heart.' He said, 'Spilled out.'
To pierce my heart," and he replied, "They're curved."
قلتُI said سيوفُthe swords الصبرِof patience مسلولةٌunsheathed
عليكَagainst you منّيfrom me قالhe said مثلولَهْblunted
I said, 'The swords of patience are unsheathed
I said, "Patience' sword for her unsheathed,"
against you by me.' He said, 'Blunted.'
And he rejoined, "Is likewise warped."
