ممشوقةٌtall and slender مثلَlike صدرِthe forepart of الرمحِthe spear عاريةٌbare
ممشوقةٌ مثلَ صدرِ الرمحِ عاريةٌ
قدindeed توَّجَتْshe crowned رأسَهاher head بالكوكبِwith the star الساريnight-wandering
قد توَّجَتْ رأسَها بالكوكبِ الساري
Tall and slender, like the forepart of a spear, bare,
A spearhead’s bare chest, her figure’s like
She has crowned her head with the night-wandering star.
A star adorns her head of flowing locks
تبكيshe weeps إذاwhen ضحِكَتْlaugh جلاّسُهاher seated companions حَرَقاًin burning anguish
تبكي إذا ضحِكَتْ جلاّسُها حَرَقاً
فالقومُso the company فيin جنَّةٍa paradise والشمعُand the candle فيin النارthe fire
فالقومُ في جنَّةٍ والشمعُ في النار
She weeps in burning anguish when her companions laugh;
Her laughing companions weep from her flame’s strike
So the company is in paradise, while the candle is in the fire.
