النومُsleep عنaway from جفنيmy eyelid طريحٌcast aside طريدْbanished
والصبرُand patience عنaway from قلبيmy heart قصيٌّremote بعيدْfar away
Sleep is cast out from my eyelid, driven away.
Sleep flees my eyelids, ever wakeful, ever wearied,
And patience is remote from my heart, far away.
And patience deserts my heart, wandering far from me.
ياO مَنْyou who سبىtook captive بالنورِwith light شمسَthe sun الضحىof the forenoon
قَلْبُthe heart المعنَّىof the tormented one لمnot (past negation) يكنْwas بالحديدْmade of iron
O you who took the forenoon sun captive with your light,
O You who rose in splendor with the dawn's fair light,
The tormented lover's heart was not made of iron.
The heart of meaning was not forged from iron or steel.
القلبُthe heart منيof mine خالدٌabiding forever فيin أسىsorrow
وفيand in غرامٍardent love شابَturned gray منهُfrom it الوليدْthe newborn
My heart abides forever in sorrow,
My heart is eternal in sorrow for You,
And in a passion that has turned a newborn gray.
And in a passion that makes the newborn seem old.
وميتتيand my death فيكfor you حسينيةٌlike Husayn's
وليand I have عذولٌa reproacher فوقَbeyond ماwhat بيafflicts me يزيدْincreases (a pun on Yazid)
And my death for you is like Husayn's,
In You, my death is a martyr's passion,
And I have a reproacher who adds still more to my suffering.
And more than all my being, it grows and spreads.
