بأيمنَon the right-hand side جرعاءِa sandy plain الكثيبِthe dune خيامُtents
لهنَّto them عليناupon us حرمةٌsanctity وذمامُand pledged protection
On the right-hand side of the dune’s sandy plain stand tents.
With the right company of dune travelers, tents
We owe them reverence and pledged protection.
Are sacrosanct to us and inviolable
أحنُّI yearn إليهاfor them كلَّevery يومٍday وليلةٍand night
وإنْeven though كانَthere were منهاfrom them بالفؤادِin the heart كلامُwounds
I yearn for them every day and night,
I yearn for them every day and night
Even though my heart bears wounds from them.
Though my heart is silent towards them
ففيهاfor in them لمنْfor the one whom أهوىI love علىin القربِnearness والنوىand distance
مقامٌa dwelling لهُfor him بينَbetween الضلوعِthe ribs مقامُa dwelling
For in those tents, near or far, the one I love
To those I love and intend closeness
Has a dwelling, and a dwelling between my ribs.
There is a place in my ribs, a special place
وليand I have حالةٌa state فيamong العاشقينَlovers عجيبةٌstrange
فؤاديmy heart ضرامٌa blaze والدموعُand the tears سجامُstreaming
And mine is a strange state among lovers:
I have a strange state among lovers
My heart is a blaze, and my tears stream down.
My heart is broken but tears flow
فياso O عاذلاًreproacher ماnot أنتَyou واللهِby God عادلاًjust
أأحفظُshall I keep? عهداًa pledge سابقاًearlier وأُلامُand I am blamed
So, O reproacher, by God, you are not just!
O critic, you are not just at all
Shall I keep an earlier pledge and yet be blamed?
Should I keep an old covenant and blame myself?
أجرنيprotect me مِنَfrom العذلِreproach الذيthat هاجَstirred لوعتيmy anguish
فإنيfor indeed I أرىconsider أنَّthat السلوَّforgetting love حرامُforbidden
Protect me from the reproach that stirred my anguish,
Save me from the rebuke that stirred my passion
For I deem forgetting love forbidden.
For I see that forbearance is forbidden
فلوfor if بكَin you ماwhat بيin me كنتَyou would تعذرُexcuse عاشقاًa lover
لهُfor him البينُseparation خصمٌan adversary والغريمُand the creditor غرامُpassion
For if you felt what I feel, you would excuse a lover
If you had wept as I did, you'd excuse a lover
Whose foe is separation, whose creditor is passion.
Whose enemies are separation and passion itself
تذكّرتُI remembered ليلاتٍnights بسلعٍat Salʿ وحاجرٍand Ḥājir
وأيامَand days قربٍcloseness والمدامُand the wine مدامُwine
I remembered nights at Salʿ and Ḥājir,
I recall nights at Suluq and Hajar
And days of closeness, when wine was wine—
Days of nearness when wine flowed
مدامةُwine سرٍّmystery لاnot مدامةُwine كرمةٍa vine
أيشربُdo ... drink? منْof بنتِthe daughter الكرومِthe vines كرامُnoble people
Wine of mystery, not wine of the vine.
Intimate wine, not wine of the vine
Do the noble drink of the daughter of vines?
I drink the noble daughter of vineyards
وإذْand when نسماتُbreezes الوصلِunion تحييrevive قلوبَناour hearts
ونحنُwhile we سهارىwakeful والوشاةُand the talebearers نيامُasleep
And when the breezes of union revived our hearts,
When the zephyrs of union revived our hearts
While we were wakeful and the talebearers slept.
As we kept vigil while foes slept
فياso O منْwho لقلبٍfor a heart أذكرتْهُreminded it حمائمٌdoves
بأيامِof days وصلٍunion فِطْرُهُنَّtheir breaking of the fast صيامُfasting
So who will help a heart that doves have reminded
O she whose doves recalled to a heart
Of days of union? Their breaking of the fast is fasting.
Days of union whose dawn was their fast
أحبَّةَbeloved ones قلبيof my heart إنَّindeed قلبيmy heart نزيلَكُمْyour guest
وحاشاand far be it نزيلthe guest الأكرمينَof the noblest يضامُbe wronged
My heart’s beloved ones, my heart is indeed your guest,
O beloveds of my heart, my heart is your dwelling
And a guest of the noblest can never be wronged.
And a noble's guest should never be wronged
سلاask, you two عنْabout فؤادٍa heart ماnot سلاforgot لكنِbut انسلىslipped away
أصابتهُstruck it عنْfrom قوسِthe bow الفراقِseparation سهامُarrows
Ask, you two, about a heart that never forgot, but slipped away:
Ask a heart that did not ask, but forgot
Arrows from the bow of separation struck it.
Pierced as it was by the bow of parting
علىupon الربعِthe dwelling لمّاwhen غبتمُyou went away عنهُfrom it وحشةٌdesolation
كوحشةِlike the desolation غمدٍa scabbard غابَwas absent عنهُfrom it حسامُa keen sword
The dwelling, since you left it, is desolate,
In the camp, when you left it was desolate
Like the desolation of a scabbard whose keen sword is gone.
As a vacant scabbard when the sword is gone
سلامٌpeace عليكمْupon you ماhow ألذَّsweet وصالَكُمْunion with you
وغايةُand the utmost مجهودِeffort المقلِof one with little سلامُa greeting
Peace be upon you—how sweet is union with you!
Peace be upon you, how sweet was your company
And the utmost one of scant means can offer is a greeting.
And the utmost effort of the weary is rest
