عن فطنةِ المتنبي

O you whose riddles make needless

O you whose riddles suffice

al-Mutanabbi’s acumen—

in place of al-Mutanabbi’s wit,

إنْ كانَ عندَكَ فهمٌ

إنْ كانَ عندَكَ فهمٌ

سلَّ لنا طولَ جبِ

سلَّ لنا طولَ جبِ

if you possess understanding,

if you have understanding,

lend us the length of a well.
