لصدِّكَto your rejection الدهرَthroughout time أمدُan end
O you who embody beauty, is there no
O you who brought beauty together, for how long
end to your lifelong rejection?
Will you be indifferent to my longing throughout time?
ليI have فيكَon your account دمعٌtears ماnot رقاceased flowing
يوماًfor a day وطرفٌand an eye ماnot رقدْslept
For you, I have tears that have not ceased
For you, I have tears that never ceased,
for a single day, and an eye that has not slept.
And eyes that never slept a day.

Your beauty, radiant in splendor—
Your radiant beauty, its noble tradition,
its tale has a lofty chain of transmission.
Shot an arrow into my heart, from your glance that never knew sleep.
سهماًan arrow إلىtoward قلبيmy heart رمىshot
طرفُكَyour eye لاmay it not ذاقَexperience رمَدْeye inflammation
An arrow at my heart was shot
He who saw the flowing hair coming from you
by your eye—may it never suffer inflammation.
Should prostrate himself before God.
ومَنْand whoever رأىsaw شعراًhair سجاlay still
منكَof yours فللهِthen before God سجدْprostrated himself
And whoever saw the draped hair
Your cheek was protected by water,
of yours prostrated himself before God.
Else it would have ignited by fire.
خدُّكَyour cheek بالماءِwith water اتقىshielded itself
لولاهُbut for it بالنارِwith fire اتقدْblazed
Your cheek shielded itself with water;
Glory to the Lord who created
without it, it would have blazed with fire.
Your lips, purer than ice.
سبحانَglory be to ربٍّa Lord قدْindeed برىfashioned
ثغرَكَyour mouth أصفىpurer مِنthan بَرَدْhail
Glory to a Lord who has fashioned
Your frown, how much agony did faces
your mouth purer than hailstones.
Feel because of it, and how much passion and fervor!
مُضْناكَyour lovesick one كمhow much قاسىendured وجىpain
فيكَfor you وكمْand how much وجدٍlonging وجدْexperienced
Your lovesick one—how much pain he has endured
My love is old, and over it
for you, and how much longing he has known!
My sleep has never gained victory.
عشقيmy love قديمٌold قدْindeed طراarisen
عليهِupon it ماthat which نوميmy sleep طرَدْdrove away
My love is old; there has come
My passions have no end,
upon it what has driven my sleep away.
Nor does my devotion have limits.
ليسَthere is no لأشواقيto my longings مدىlimit
ولاand no لسلوانيfor my consolation مدَدْaid
There is no limit to my longings,
From his glance, a sword unsheathed,
nor any aid for my consolation.
And from his mouth, a home furnished.
مِنْfrom طرفهhis eye سيفاًa sword نضاunsheathed
مِنْfrom ثغرِهِhis mouth داراًa house نضَدْarranged in layers
From his eye he unsheathed a sword;
None who fell in love tasted
from his mouth he built up a house.
What I tasted of yearning from him.
ماnot ذاقَtasted ذوone possessed of وجدٍlonging كماlike what

قدْindeed ذقتُI have tasted فيهِon his account مِنْof كمدْanguish
No lover has tasted anything like
O my tormentor! You are most unfair,
the anguish I have tasted on his account.
And for the blamers, a lesson to be learned!
ياO عذَّليmy reproachers أنتمْyou عدىenemies
وللملمّاتِand for calamities عددْtools
O my reproachers, you are enemies,
For I met all vanishing
and tools for calamities.
In some of his dignity.

For all the ruin
I encounter comes from some folly.
