ياO عالماًa scholar عاملاًone who acts on his learning قدْindeed جلَّis exalted تشبيهاًin comparison
عنِbeyond البدورِthe full moons وفيand in العلياءِloftiness يحكيهاhe resembles them
O scholar who acts on his learning, too exalted to be likened
O learned man who is exalted in similes
To the full moons, though in loftiness he resembles them.
Above the full moons, though the stars relate his tale,
وفاضلاًand a man of merit فاضلاًexcelling تحويencompasses بدايتُهُhis beginning
مِنَfrom النهايةِthe culmination تهذيباًrefinement وتنبيهاand admonition
And a man of surpassing merit, whose beginning encompasses
And o virtuous man whose beginning contains
Refinement and admonition drawn from the culmination.
His end in the way of rectitude and counsel -
لاno ماnot حججتَyou performed the pilgrimage بلrather الآدابُthe arts and learning أجمعُهاall of them
وماand not قدِمْتَyou arrived بلrather الدنياthe world وماand whatever فيهاis in it
No, it was not you who made the pilgrimage, but all the arts;
Not what you have debated but all refinement combined,
And it was not you who arrived, but the world and all it holds.
Not what you have offered but the whole world and what is in it.
