أياO أرضَland الشمالِthe north فدتكِmay it ransom you نفسيmy soul
أيا أرضَ الشمالِ فدتكِ نفسي
وأُصغِرُand I deem too paltry أنْthat أقولَI say فداكِmay it ransom you ماليmy wealth
وأُصغِرُ أنْ أقولَ فداكِ مالي
O land of the north, may my soul be your ransom.
Oh land of the north, my soul I sacrifice for you
And I deem it too paltry to say, 'May my wealth be your ransom.'
And I think it too small to say my wealth I sacrifice
وقالواand they said مِلْturn إلىtoward جهةٍa direction سواهاother than it
وقالوا مِلْ إلى جهةٍ سواها
فقلتُso I said القلبُthe heart فيin جهةِthe side of الشمالِthe left (also: the north)
فقلتُ القلبُ في جهةِ الشمالِ
And they said, 'Turn toward some other direction.'
And they said why not to a direction other than it
So I said, 'The heart lies on the left.'
So I said, the heart is in the direction of the north
