O ʿAlw, the eye's tears suffice in place of a draught of water,

and the sea of my passion for you has no limit.

May you rejoice in my anguish over you and my tenderness

toward you, as my heart is with you despite the distance.

And I remain steadfast, never altering a covenant,

even if you later change the covenants.

And you alone have gained all beauty,

and I alone have gained all sorrow.

When the reproachers blame me, I hide my tears

and display patience I do not possess even in part.

I conceal her, as best I can, by speaking of others,

and bow my head awhile, neither repeating nor saying anything new.

Thus I have the appearance of one carefree, untouched by love,

and the inner state of a sorrowful captive, one bereft.

In the flood of my tears I see a supplicant denied,

and that spilled blood—oh, if only it did some good!

I am jealous over al-Ghuwayr's people for her sake,

and refrain from mentioning Salʿ and describing the hills of Najd.

And I shun speculative theology for her mouth's sake,

lest I allude to it through the 'single jewel'—the indivisible atom.

And I guard the protected pasture from mention, despite my yearning,

and, despite my longing, turn away from wormwood and laurel.

Nor could I have the breeze carry my message,

for fear it would return with the scent of aromatic incense.

I fear for her because of her clan, among whom

every valiant warrior sees death as honey.

O ʿAlw, my love is as radiant as your face,

but my fortune is like your coal-black curls.

I ask you: whenever you wish to send a rare gift

to me, by God, send nothing but your dream-vision.

And how can a dream-vision visit one who lies awake,

    tender-hearted, adding anguish to anguish?

Ask the star about my state; it will tell you my anguish

and the weeping and sleeplessness I endure.

    فواعجبا للجائرِ العادلِ القدِّ

    Though you are unjust, O ʿAlwā, your figure is well-proportioned;

how wondrous—an unjust one with a justly proportioned figure!

So do not fail me in what you promised, for I

believe that breaking a promise is a scoundrel's trait.

I intend to recount what happened, yet remain far from doing so,

and why you sought to torment me, and what caused your turning away.

So I harbor thoughts of forgetting, but love conjures you up,

pictured before me, O little vow-breaker.

Then beauty intercedes for you—and beauty is an intercessor—

so I lower my gaze, ashamed to meet it with refusal.

And modesty of countenance is no trait of the wolf,

but it is a trait of the tawny lion.
