قَدْhas حُبيwas endowed حسناًbeauty بهِthrough it يستعذبُfinds sweet القدحَdisparagement بيof me
My creed is love of a fawn with a gilded body.
My doctrine is love of a graceful body doctrined
He has been endowed with beauty, through which he finds disparaging me sweet.
I've loved a beauty with which the cup is sweetened
عاذلاًreproacher ماnot أنتَyou فيin لومِكَyour blame ليof me عادلاjust
سائلاquestioner يخبركَwill tell you دمعٌa tear قدْhas همىpoured down سائلاflowing
O reproacher, you are not just in your blame of me.
Reproaching, you're not just in blaming me, reproaching
O questioner, a tear that has poured down in a stream will tell you.
A questioner, a weeping tear has made him question
آهah لاdo not تعذلreproach فماfor … not قلبيmy heart بذاfor this آهلاfit
منصبيmy standing والعقلُand reason أذهبْتهُماI lost them both مِنْbecause of صبيa boy
Ah, do not reproach me; my heart is not equal to this.
Ah, do not blame me, for my heart is not to blame, ah
My standing and my reason—I have lost them both because of a boy.
My purpose and reason, infatuation has erased them
ماnot رُبيwas reared إلاّexcept وقدْand already ربيgrew فيهِin him ماwhat ربيgrew
رقَّwas delicate ماwhat فيon خدِّهِhis cheek الورديِّrosy قدْhad رقماtraced
He was scarcely reared before what grew within him had flourished.
I am not brought up but brought up in me what I'm brought up
Delicate was what had been traced upon his rosy cheek.
Softened what's on his rosy cheek has softened
عندماwhen رأيتُI saw دمعيmy tears قدْalready حكىresembled عندماblood-red dye
ضرَّماharmed—what فيin مهجتيmy soul مِنْthrough هجرِهِhis forsaking ضرَّماhe kindled
When I saw that my tears already resembled blood-red dye,
When I saw my tear has narrated when
What he kindled in my soul through his forsaking caused pain.
Pained in my bowels from his estrangement pained
منْfrom أبيa proud one يأبىrefuses الرضىapproval نلتُI received الجفاharshness منfrom أبيmy father
فارعَso heed بيfor my sake رضاهُhis approval ياO قلبُheart تهْwander وارعبِand tremble
From a proud one who refuses approval, I received harshness—from my father.
From my father who refuses consent, I got estrangement from my father
So heed his approval for my sake, O heart; wander and tremble.
So please him with his consent, O heart, and please
منthe one who صَلَىset ليfor me فخَّهُhis snare بلrather قدْhas نضاunsheathed منصلاa blade
أوor لاnot ملازمbound to آخرهhis end أولاfirst
The one who set his snare for me has, rather, unsheathed a blade.
Whoever prays for me, but he prayed estranging
Or not—his end is bound to the beginning [wording unclear].
Or no bosom friend, end what was begun
بلبلاbewildered فؤادُthe heart مضناهُthe one he wasted away بلىyes indeed بلrather بلاafflicted
فانْهَso admonish بيthrough me غيريothers than me ولذاتِand the delights الغرامِof passion انهَبِplunder
He bewildered the heart of the one he wasted away—yes, rather, he afflicted it.
Nightingale, his suffering heart, yes, nightingale, pain
So make me a warning to others, and plunder the delights of passion.
For with me is another, and for the pleasures of passion, with me
وَالْهَand turn away بيwith me عنfrom عذلreproach بلrather ياO حشايmy innermost being الهبيblaze
ماnot نسيforgot طيبَthe sweetness زمانِthe time الوصلof union فيَّwithin me ماnot نسيforgot
And with me turn away from reproach; rather, O my innermost heart, blaze!
And the woe is me from blame, rather, O my companions, woe
The sweetness of union's days has not been forgotten within me—not forgotten.
Not forgetting the fragrance of the days of union in me not forgetting
والمسيand touch رقيبناour watcher بالكفwith the palm لمdid not ألمسI touch
جانسيmatch حربيmy war فألفىand so he found كلماwhenever جانسيmatched me (uncertain reading)
And touch our watcher with the palm; I did not touch him.
And the toucher our watcher with the palm I have not touched
Match my war; he found [it] whenever he matched me [reading uncertain].
My companion, my war so I found whenever my companion
وارْقَand rise بيwith me ياO طرفُeye سهداًsleeplessness والنجومَand the stars ارقبِwatch

And rise with me, O eye, in sleeplessness, and watch the stars.
And shed tears for me, O eyelid, shedding and the stars, shed
A slanderer against me is whoever has not been enamored of a mouth with pearly teeth.
And arouse in me, who did not care for my lip, arouse
