بعلةِfrom the illness of السلِّconsumption (tuberculosis) توفِّيْdied أخيmy brother
بعلةِ السلِّ توفِّيْ أخي
وكانَand he was فيamong الأسيافِthe swords معدوداcounted
وكانَ في الأسيافِ معدودا
My brother died of consumption,
You fulfilled the pledge of the sword, my brother,
And he was counted among the swords.
And were counted among the blades,
ياO مغمداًsheathed فيin التربِthe dust مِنْfrom بينناamong us
يا مغمداً في التربِ مِنْ بيننا
أبكيكَI weep for you مسلولاًunsheathed; also, stricken with consumption ومغموداand sheathed
أبكيكَ مسلولاً ومغمودا
O you from our midst, sheathed in the dust,
O you who now lie in the dust among us,
I weep for you, unsheathed and sheathed.
I weep for you, sheathed and shrouded.
